Mindscape Dispensary opened in Hobbs, New Mexico with the product quality and the service culture to build a loyal customer base. The problem was the same one facing almost every cannabis operator in a regulated market: the standard channels that retailers use to reach new customers were largely unavailable. Billboard spend had a capped return. Digital advertising platforms restrict cannabis promotion at every level. The tools that other retail categories rely on to drive awareness and repeat visits simply didn’t apply.
Before working with AOS, Mindscape had no clear brand identity that would make a new customer choose them over the dispensary down the street. Promotions were inconsistent and not reaching the right people at the right time. The website existed but wasn’t functioning as a sales tool. And there was no system for turning a first-time buyer into a repeat customer — no way to stay in contact, no way to bring people back between visits.
In a market with 350+ dispensaries across the state and advertising restrictions that prevent most of them from differentiating through paid reach, the only durable competitive advantage is organic authority — the credibility that builds when the right customer finds you through search, trusts what they find, and keeps coming back.
The brief wasn’t to find workarounds for the advertising restrictions. It was to build the kind of digital presence that made those restrictions irrelevant — one that reached customers through the channels that were available, created enough trust that first-time buyers became regulars, and gave the business a way to stay in contact with its customer base that didn’t depend on walk-in traffic or static advertising to sustain it.
The existing website wasn’t working as a sales tool because it wasn’t designed as one. The rebuild integrated directly with the Dutchie POS system, enabling real-time product availability, consistent promotion management, and a purchasing flow that matched how cannabis customers actually shop — browsing by category, looking for deals, and making decisions quickly once they’ve found what they want. The website became the place where promotions were activated, where returning customers came first, and where new customers formed their first sense of the brand.
A cannabis buyer searching for a dispensary in Hobbs is the warmest possible lead — active intent, ready to visit, making a decision in the next few minutes. The SEO work built statewide and local visibility across the high-intent searches that belong to that buyer: transactional queries from customers ready to purchase, and educational queries from customers building trust before their first visit. Over six months, the site generated 202,000 impressions and 8,430 clicks at a 4.2% click-through rate — from searches where Mindscape had previously been invisible.
In a market where paid advertising can’t create brand awareness, content does. High-performing pages built around local demand and product education gave customers a reason to find Mindscape before they’d decided which dispensary to visit — and a reason to trust the recommendation once they had. A retailer that teaches earns a different kind of loyalty than one that just sells.
The repeat customer problem wasn’t about product quality — it was about contact. Between visits, Mindscape had no reliable way to reach its existing customer base. The promotions and email architecture built that connection: targeted campaigns based on actual purchase behaviour, consistent promotional cadence that gave customers a reason to return, and a system that ran without requiring manual effort for every send.
Without a consistent brand, every customer encounter started from scratch. The brand identity work established the visual and verbal character of Mindscape across the website, the email communications, the social presence, and the in-store experience — so that a customer who found Mindscape through search, through a promotion, or through a friend’s recommendation encountered the same sense of who Mindscape was at every point of contact.
Within the first 90 days, monthly sales grew 40% month over month. Foot traffic doubled. Those are the short-term numbers — and they mattered. But the outcome that the 36-month relationship reflects is different in kind, not just in scale.
Mindscape is now a top 25 dispensary in New Mexico out of more than 350 locations. That ranking isn’t a campaign result. It is the accumulated weight of three years of organic authority building, consistent customer communication, and a digital presence that kept working between visits in a market where most competitors are still relying on the same static advertising that was capping Mindscape’s growth when the engagement began.
The 4.9 star rating across 500+ reviews is the signal that matters most to a new customer deciding between dispensaries. It is the proof point that a buyer who has never visited Mindscape finds when they search — and the signal that tips the decision before they’ve walked through the door. The architecture produced the visits. The visits produced the reviews. The reviews produce the next visit from a customer who hadn’t heard of Mindscape until they searched.
The business now operates with a predictable revenue engine that didn’t exist before the engagement. Promotions reach the right customers at the right time. New customers find the dispensary through search rather than through proximity or chance. Returning customers come back because the system stays in contact with them — not because they happened to drive past.
Every cannabis operator in a regulated market faces the same basic problem: the advertising channels that other retailers use to drive awareness and repeat visits are largely unavailable. The dispensaries that treat this as an unsolvable constraint compete on proximity and price. The ones that treat it as an architecture problem build something their competitors can’t easily replicate.
Organic authority compounds. A dispensary that has built three years of search visibility, content credibility, and review density is not one campaign away from being displaced by a competitor with a bigger advertising budget. The budget can’t be spent on the channels that matter most anyway. What matters is what was built when the budget was directed at the right things.
The question worth sitting with is what a new customer in your market finds when they search for a dispensary — and whether what they find makes choosing yours feel like the obvious decision, or just one option among many.
We start every cannabis engagement by looking at what a new customer finds when they search for a dispensary in your market — and whether what they find gives them a reason to choose yours before they’ve visited any of the alternatives.
